When I was a child, I had three favorite places: the woods, my grandparent's front porch, and my bedroom.
In the woods, I climbed trees, tiptoed past rattlesnakes, and learned to love God in Nature. During the summer, sitting in a glider on my grandparent's front porch, I learned that grandparents are one of God's greatest blessings. I also learned how to shell peas and love summer storms. Alone in the sanctuary of my room, I read books voraciously, and dreamed up stories of my own.
As I grew up, I learned that stories cannot always cure loneliness, forests are sometimes destroyed to make way for parking lots, and grandparents do not live forever, except in our hearts. So the stories I write portray reality's raw edges as well as hope in happy endings, through the miracle and mystery believers call faith.
In every book, my wish for readers is best expressed through the words in a poem written by Emily Dickinson, one of the most beloved poets of the 19th century:
"If I can stop one heart from breaking, ease one soul the pain; if I can help one fainting robin unto its nest again, I shall not have lived in vain."
So come on in. Step into a world of fiction bursting with life, peopled with men and women whose souls have holes in them, who are scuffed and scarred by lifeóbut who find the courage to live and love deeply anyway.
